Officially designated on June 20, 1980, the Augusta AVA made history before many of the wine regions that are household names today — including Napa Valley, which received its AVA designation in January 1981.
An American Viticultural Area is a defined grape-growing region recognized for geographic or climatic characteristics that distinguish it from surrounding areas and influence how grapes are grown.
The Augusta AVA encompasses approximately 15 square miles surrounding Augusta, Missouri, along the Missouri River. When the region received its designation, its unique soil, climate, wines, and long history of grape growing and winemaking were among the characteristics considered in establishing the area.
Augusta’s winemaking roots stretch back to the mid-1800s, when German immigrants recognized the area’s potential for growing grapes. That heritage continues today through the vineyards and wineries that call Augusta home.
